NOTICE – VIRTUAL EVENT – TUESDAY – DEP will hold a virtual public information meeting on the license application for a coal-free surface mine in Westmoreland County

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will host a virtual public information meeting for the public to ask questions and receive information about the proposed SMT East open pit mine. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. using the Webex platform.

Representatives of DEP and the applicant will present information about the proposed activity and answer questions. DEP staff will also explain the permit application review process and display maps on screen. DEP began its technical review of the applications on February 10, 2021, to determine whether the applications comply with state laws and regulations for coal-free surface mining, and its review of the application is ongoing. .

Ligonier Stone & Lime Company is offering a new coal-free surface mining license on a 224.2 acre site along PA-217 and west of Torrance Road in Derry Township, Westmoreland County, approximately 0.25 mile northwest of Brenizer which is considered an Environmental Justice Zone. The DEP strives to facilitate better public participation to ensure that the public is informed and has the opportunity to get involved.
