Meta Announces New Virtual Event to Share How It’s Using AI to Build for Metaverse Change

Looking to learn about the concept of metaverse and what it could mean for the future of digital connection?

That might help – later this month, Meta is hosting a virtual event where various internal experts will discuss their approaches to using AI in building the metaverse, and the role machine learning systems will play in the process.

Speakers, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, will explore the various applications of the Metaverse and what it will take to get there.

As Meta explains:

Building for the Metaverse is the most ambitious long-term bet we’ve ever made as a company. The experiences we envision will require massive technological advancements over the next few years, and our continued advancements in AI will be central to our success. The breakthroughs we are currently making in AI are happening thanks to the long-term bets we made early in our research, in areas such as computer vision, speech and translation, and our community of developers. »

Meta will explore each of these elements specifically in this virtual event, with sessions including Providing inclusive technologies through translations’Building responsible AI at Meta’ and ‘The path to intelligence at the human level’.

The latter will undoubtedly scare the likes of Elon Musk, who has repeatedly warned of the potential dangers of advancing AI.

But whether you like it or not, this research is ongoing, and Meta seeks to integrate it into the larger scope of the metaverse, to facilitate the next level of digital connection.

Although it’s interesting, once again, to note how Meta seeks to take ownership of broader technology conversations and development by putting it all under the “metaverse” banner. By renaming the company accordingly and realigning each new advancement as a metaverse addition, the company seeks to claim the next step in connecting, making Meta synonymous with such advancements.

Is AI really a key part of the metaverse? Well, that depends – what is the metaverse, exactly? Because it is not yet defined, Meta can attach whatever it wants in the project, then position itself as the main platform of the space, and of each development, being “Meta”, l initiator of the term.

It reminds me of how regulators in some regions told Meta – and then Facebook – that it had to shut down its Free Basics internet access program because many people who had signed up for the initiative, who had no hadn’t had access to the Internet in the past, had finally come to think of Facebook as the Internet. They failed to differentiate between access to the web and the Facebook platform, which gave the company a significant business advantage by distorting perceptions of what exactly the web can be and controlling the access to this audience.

It now appears to be doing the same thing on a much larger scale, doing all things Metaverse, which for all intents and purposes will be owned by Meta itself. You want to connect in VR, you will in the metaverse of Meta, you want to create new AR experiences, they will have to be aligned with the metaverse change, under Meta management. In that sense, Meta’s corporate name change serves a much larger purpose than simply realigning the company’s focus or potentially distancing itself from past controversies.
