Headlines – Gun Violence Response Team Announces Virtual Community Seminar Series

Free three-part series scheduled for June 3-4 in honor of Wear Orange and National Gun Violence Awareness Day

Annapolis, MD (May 20, 2021) – The Anne Arundel County Gun Violence Response Team will present a free virtual seminar to raise awareness of local gun violence, in partnership with Anne Arundel County Manager Steuart Pittman, Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley and Anne Arundel County Health Officer Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman. The three-part virtual seminar will be held Thursday, June 3 and Friday, June 4 in conjunction with Wear Orange and National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

“The level of gun violence in our communities is not acceptable. This is a public health crisis that we must address,” said Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman. “Our task force on gun violence prevention has defined our agenda and our gun violence response team drives us forward. Please join us.”

The seminar will cover a wide range of topics, including understanding gun violence in the community; bend the curve of armed violence; and partnerships to reduce violence. The series is open to the public and registration is required. The opening session will feature Dr. Georges Benjamin, Executive Director of the American Public Health Association, as speaker. Dr. Benjamin will speak about gun violence as a public health issue.

“This is an important conversation, and we have to – unfortunately – continue to have it,” said Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley. “Like many cities across America, Annapolis has struggled with too many guns. We not only had a horrific mass shooting in 2018, but also continued instances of gun violence on a daily basis. I hope you will join us as we continue this work towards safer communities.
